Natural remedies, including essential oils, are experiencing a boom in popularity. More and more people are turning to them in their quest for wellness. Indeed, some essential oils can be very effective for managing a range of conditions. They can also be enjoyable to use. But are they a suitable treatment for TMJ pain? The answer to that question is worthy of consideration.

How Can Essential Oils Help?

TMJ disorder (TMD) is a complex condition, and there is no “one size fits all” remedy for it. Still, some people have found a degree of pain relief by using the following essential oils:

  • Lavender. Lavender promotes relaxation, so it may help to reduce tension in overworked facial muscles.
  • Eucalyptus. Some research indicates that eucalyptus is useful for reducing inflammation. It might even be able to block nerve signals that cause TMJ pain.
  • Chamomile. In addition to being very relaxing, chamomile may also help to reduce the inflammation associated with a range of joint conditions, including TMD.
  • Rosemary. Rosemary is often used to relieve the pain and inflammation that are associated with musculoskeletal conditions.

Cautions to Keep in Mind

If you choose to use essential oils as part of your TMJ therapy, there are some important cautions that you should bear in mind:

  • Essential oils cannot address the root cause of TMD. While essential oils can help with symptom management, they are often unable to address the underlying cause of TMJ disorders.
  • Essential oils can supplement professional treatment. You should visit a qualified medical professional, such as a dentist, to receive help with your TMD. They may adjust your bite or provide other treatment to address the primary cause of your pain. You may choose to incorporate essential oils as a supplementary therapy.
  • Not all essential oils are high-quality. Essential oils are not well-regulated. You should do thorough research so you know you are purchasing a high-quality product.
  • Some essential oils can cause problems. If you are prone to allergic reactions, you should be very cautious with essential oils. Some oils are risky even for those without allergies. For example, yarrow may adversely affect sperm production and increase the risk of cancer.

Essential oils may have some benefits, but they are not a cure for TMD. Use them with caution so you can find relief from your pain in the safest, most effective way possible.
